He is Still Here

The other day I was sitting on my bed working on something when I noticed the sound of a shower running. It was Isaiah showering before going to work. The miracle of that fact was not lost on me.

Tears welled up in my eyes as I flashed back to 5 1/2 years ago when in that same bathroom, I had to help him wash his body. He was 13 years old and already going through changes. His mom had to help him bathe just like when he was a toddler.

It was difficult for both of us. I would inevitably end up soaking wet and having to clean up water off of the bathroom floor. He usually ended up frustrated about something. Usually, because he wanted to do it himself, but couldn’t.

As I sat listening to the water run, I couldn’t help but cry. The feeling of gratitude was completely overwhelming. He can wash himself, and not only that, he was washing himself before going to work. He can work. And not only that. He can drive himself to work.

Miracles still happen today. Sometimes we don’t recognize them as such. Sometimes we just think our hard work or pure grit is what did it. That is part of it, but there are absolute miracles inside of all of it.

Isaiah can still only do those things with his right hand. He has not gained full use of his right side. Does that make me sad? Sometimes. But he wasn’t even expected to live, so I am more grateful he lived through that explosion in his brain. He is still here. That brings me great joy.

Sometimes we go through things in our lives that change us. Sometimes we are required to live without something or someone who was important to us. Regardless of what we have been through, or what we have lost, we can still find miracles in each day. We can find joy.

One thing we will never lose is the love of God. He is still here.

We can be bitter or angry that things aren't the way we thought they would be, or we can be grateful for life itself, and live it to the best of our ability.

What will you choose?

“You make known to me the path of life; you will fill me with joy in your presence, with eternal pleasures at your right hand.” -Psalms‬ ‭16:11‬
